Trusting Krishna’s Plan in Difficult Times
Introduction
Life often brings challenges we cannot predict—loss, disappointment, uncertainty, or personal struggles. In such moments, it’s natural to feel helpless, afraid, or overwhelmed. We might ask, Why is this happening to me? How can I move forward?
In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krishna reveals a beautiful truth: real strength lies not in our ability to control everything but in our ability to surrender to His divine plan. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up; it means trusting that Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, knows what’s best for us. By taking refuge in Him, we gain inner strength, clarity, and peace to navigate even the most difficult times.
This blog will explore Krishna’s teachings on surrender, why surrender brings us strength, and practical ways to trust Krishna’s plan in all circumstances.
Why Do We Struggle to Surrender?
- Desire for Control: We cling to the illusion that we can control every outcome, but life often proves otherwise.
- Fear of the Unknown: We hesitate to surrender because we fear what might happen if we let go.
- Attachment to Expectations: When things don’t go as planned, we resist change instead of seeing Krishna’s hand in it.
- Lack of Faith: We doubt that Krishna truly cares for us or knows what’s best for our spiritual growth.
Krishna, however, assures us that surrendering to Him is the greatest source of strength, security, and peace.
Krishna’s Teachings on the Power of Surrender
1. Surrender to Krishna and Be Free from Fear
One of the most comforting and powerful verses in the Bhagavad-gita is 18.66:
“sarva-dharmān parityajya
mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ”
Translation:
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.”
Insight:
Krishna lovingly invites us to surrender to Him, promising to protect us from all suffering and difficulties. Surrender doesn’t mean weakness; it means placing our faith in Krishna’s wisdom and love, knowing that He will guide us toward what is best for our spiritual progress.
2. Krishna Takes Care of His Devotees
In Bhagavad-gita 9.22, Krishna reassures us that He personally cares for those who depend on Him:
“ananyāś cintayanto māṁ
ye janāḥ paryupāsate
teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ
yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham”
Translation:
“But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form—to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have.”
Insight:
When we surrender to Krishna, He takes responsibility for our well-being. Whether we are lacking something or fearful of losing what we have, Krishna ensures that we are taken care of, physically and spiritually.
3. Trust Krishna’s Divine Plan
In Bhagavad-gita 2.47, Krishna teaches us to focus on our duties and let go of attachment to the results:
“karmaṇy-evādhikāras te
mā phaleṣu kadācana
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr
mā te saṅgo ‘stvakarmaṇi”
Translation:
“You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, nor be attached to inaction.”
Insight:
We often become anxious about the outcomes of our efforts, but Krishna reminds us that the results are in His hands. Our role is to act sincerely and leave the rest to Him. This mindset relieves us of unnecessary stress and fear.
The Strength Found in Surrender
Surrendering to Krishna doesn’t mean we stop striving; it means we act with faith, knowing Krishna is guiding the outcome. By surrendering, we experience:
- Inner Peace: Letting go of control and trusting Krishna calms the mind and heart.
- Freedom from Fear: Krishna assures us that He is our protector. When we surrender to Him, fear loses its grip on us.
- Clarity and Purpose: Surrender helps us focus on our spiritual growth rather than getting lost in temporary struggles.
- Spiritual Progress: When we surrender, Krishna guides us toward the path that leads back to Him.
Practical Steps to Surrender to Krishna
- Chant Krishna’s Holy Names
Chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra fills the heart with Krishna’s presence and removes doubts and fears:
“Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare,
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.”Through chanting, we develop trust in Krishna and feel His divine presence guiding us.
- Offer Your Struggles to Krishna
Whenever you face challenges, pause and pray:
“Krishna, I surrender this situation to You. Please guide me and protect me. I trust in Your plan.”
Offering our worries to Krishna relieves us of the burden of trying to solve everything on our own. - Study the Bhagavad-gita
Regularly reading the Bhagavad-gita helps us understand Krishna’s love and His role as our ultimate well-wisher. Reflect on verses like 18.66 and 9.22 to strengthen your faith in Krishna’s care.
- Accept Krishna’s Arrangement
Trust that every situation—pleasant or painful—is Krishna’s mercy. Challenges are opportunities for us to grow closer to Him. As devotees, our role is to remain patient, grateful, and focused on Krishna.
- Associate with Devotees
Surround yourself with devotees who inspire you to trust Krishna’s plan. Their faith and guidance will encourage you to surrender more fully.
The Example of Queen Kunti: Surrender in Adversity
Queen Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, faced countless difficulties throughout her life—war, exile, and the loss of loved ones. Yet, instead of complaining or questioning Krishna, she embraced her struggles as opportunities to remember Him more deeply.
In her beautiful prayers recorded in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Queen Kunti says:
“vipadah santu tah sasvat
tatra tatra jagad-guro
bhavato darshanam yat syad
apunar bhava-darshanam”
Translation:
“I wish that all those calamities would happen again and again so that we could see You again and again, for seeing You means that we will no longer see repeated births and deaths.”
Insight:
Queen Kunti teaches us that surrendering to Krishna transforms even difficulties into blessings. When we remember Krishna, we transcend material suffering and experience divine peace.
Conclusion: Strength Through Surrender
Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad-gita remind us that surrender is not a sign of weakness—it is the source of true strength, courage, and peace. By surrendering to Krishna, we let go of fear, anxiety, and attachment, and we allow His divine plan to unfold in our lives.
When we chant Krishna’s holy names, offer our struggles to Him, and trust in His loving care, we find the strength to face any challenge with faith and grace. Krishna promises to protect and guide us—our role is to trust Him and surrender wholeheartedly.
